TRAFFIC VIOLATOR SCHOOL MONITORING (TVSM) PROGRAM
TRAFFIC VIOLATORS
Frequently Asked Questions

1.   I have a question/problem with a traffic citation.  Who should I contact?

Information on citations issued in the County of Los Angeles can be obtained at Court's Metropolitan Branch, located at: 1945 S. Hill Street, Room 106, Los Angeles, CA  90007.  You may also contact the Metropolitan Court via telephone at the following telephone numbers:

(213) 742-1884
(213) 742-6648
(213) 742-1928

Questions or concerns regarding citations issued to juvenile (under 18 years old) traffic violators should be directed to the Los Angeles Superior Court's Juvenile Division at (213) 744-4158.

Please note that TVSM does not have any information regarding traffic citations issued, nor does TVSM have the authority to resolve traffic citations.

2.   Can I resolve my traffic violation through TVSM?

No. You will need to contact the court jurisdiction indicated on your traffic citation, either in person or via telephone.

Please click here for contact information for the courts.

In addition, you can resolve your traffic violation online through the Los Angeles Superior Court's website.

3.   What is the benefit of taking traffic school (Classroom or Home Study)?

By taking an approved traffic school course, you can have one point (resulting from a cited traffic violation) removed from your driving record. This may prevent an increase in your auto insurance premium, and in some cases, may prevent a suspension of your driving privileges.

4.   Can I sign up for traffic school through TVSM?

No. You will need to make arrangements with the Court before you take traffic school.  This may be done in-person at the Court location listed on:

your citation;
via telephone at (213) 742-1884;
via mail (please see citation for mailing instructions); or
via the Internet at www.lasuperiorcourt.org/traffic.

Should you elect to take traffic school, you will need to pay an additional Court-imposed fee on top of the bail amount from your violation. Please note that this additional fee does not go towards taking a traffic school, and you will still need to pay the school for taking their course.

5.   Can I elect to take traffic school after I pay the bail amount on my citation?

It is strongly advised that you elect to take traffic school (and make the proper arrangements with the Court) at the time you pay your bail.

Should you elect to take traffic school after you pay your bail, you will have to contact the Court listed on your citation to make special arrangements. This process may involve paying additional fees, and you may also be required to appear in front of a Judge to request traffic school.

6.   I currently have more than one point on my driving record. Can I take several approved traffic school courses to remove them?

For the purpose of removing points from your driving record, you may only take traffic school once every 18 months.

7.   I have arranged with the Court to take traffic school. What is the next step?

You will have to find a traffic school, contact the school and take the school's course.

If you would like to take a classroom traffic violator school class, please contact TVSM at (800) 555-4452 to request a Classroom Location List for the County of Los Angeles. You may also access this list through this website by clicking here

If you would like to take a non-Internet home study course, please contact TVSM via telephone (800) 555-4452 to request a Classroom Location List for the County of Los Angeles which includes a listing of non-Internet home study traffic school courses.  You may also access this list through this website by clicking here

If you would like to take an Internet home study course, please visit the Los Angeles Superior Court's website to access a list of home study providers.

8.

If I choose to take a classroom traffic violator course, does the traffic violator school have to appear on the Classroom Location List for the County of Los Angeles?

Not necessarily. There are two lists of approved traffic schools from which you may select a traffic school:

(1)  the TVSM Classroom Location List; and

(2) the California DMV-published list of DMV-licensed traffic violator schools. The DMV-published list is printed on newsprint and is available at the Court. You may also request the DMV traffic school list from TVSM by contacting us at (800) 555-4452.

Please note that the DMV-published list is produced by the DMV and is updated by the DMV twice a year (as opposed to the Classroom Location List for the County of Los Angeles, which is updated on a quarterly basis). In addition, please note that TVSM does not monitor any school on the DMV list that is not also on the Classroom Location List for the County of Los Angeles. Therefore TVSM cannot ensure those schools' compliance to Court and/or DMV regulations, and cannot follow up on consumer complaints regarding those schools.

9.

If I choose to take a home study traffic school course, does the home study traffic school have to appear on the Classroom Location List (for non-Internet home study programs) or the Los Angeles Superior Court's listing of approved Internet home study programs?

Yes. Unlike classroom traffic schools, home study traffic schools are not licensed by the DMV and must be approved by the Court jurisdiction. Therefore, if you want to take a home study course to resolve your traffic citation, you must choose a home study school that appears on the Classroom Location List for the County of Los Angeles's Home Study Section or the Los Angeles Superior Court's approved Internet Home Study list.

10.   Is there an age requirement for traffic violators taking a home study traffic school to resolve a traffic violation?

Yes. In order to take a home study traffic school course to resolve a traffic violation, you (the traffic violator) must be 18 years of age or older.

11.

Once I have taken a traffic school course, are there any additionals steps I need to take in order to have my point removed from my driving record?

Upon successful completion of a classroom traffic violator school class, you should be given a DMV traffic school completion, which you must present to the Court.  Upon successful completion of a home study traffic school course, you should receive notification that you successfully completed the home study traffic school course. Additionally, the home study traffic school is to submit to the Court your completion certificate, and unless requested by the Court, you do not have to present your completion certificate to the Court in-person.

 12.   I recently took a classroom/home study traffic school course and I would like to report a problem. Who do I contact?

Please contact TVSM at (800) 555-4452 to file a complaint. In addition, you may file a complaint via email at tvsm@lacdc.org.

Also, please note that you can evaluate a traffic school course (classroom or home study) using the traffic school evaluation sheet printed on the classroom location listing.
